Finding gold

goldentortoisebeetle

This drop of gold on a mulberry leaf caught my eye as I walked through the orchard this morning. Photo taken May 12, 2013; 9:15 a.m. sunny, breezy and in the 50’s. I did a search and believe it is a Golden Tortoise Beetle or Charidotella sexpunctata. The beetle is known for its ability to change color. Here is an article that describes how it is able to transform its appearance. They feed on leaves of plants from the family Convolvulaceae such as morning glory, sweet potato, and bindweed. Stunning!
